First of the CEO's in charge of all those major companies whose products have been identified with phthalates should be sued! Why hasn't anyone stepped up yet? All those different cosmetic, hair and hygene products are doing so much harm to future generations of children by enhancing the probability of attention deficit disorder, contribute to male reproductive problems, and feminize boys to?! What has the world come too?!
ReplyDeleteIf all of this harm can occur in the womb, imagine the damage we are putting ourselves through every single day! I mean are we putting ourselves at risk or does this just occur to the prego's because they are in a more delicate condition than we non-prego's? And if this does affect us can this also affect our children in the future? Will they be in an even more higher risk? Are some of these chemicals more harmful than others? and if so why hasnt there been a law that banned them like in Europe. i mean sure there has been a federal law that went into effect a year ago that banned phthalates in children’s vinyl toys but not in our everyday products?
ADHD can really be extremley serious, i mean its not just hyperactivity not only will this affect him mentally but also socially.it can affect the child’s ability to process and store information and get along with others, Its important to be interpersonal, it makes you and other people happy in life. :o)
Alright guys, im glad to know i got that off my chest whew(sigh) that was a load off lol, and can anyone please try to answer my questions? (i know they're alot, i got really into it as you can see) lol love you all.

If manufacturers don't ALWAYS list phthalates on their labels, how does the consumer educate themselves on whether it does? If EPA( Environmental Protection Agency)doesn't take immediate action on discontinuing these cosmetic and fragrances then the risk of prenatal exposure of phthalates will most likely increase.
ReplyDeleteThe article states that the percentage of kids diagnosed with behavioral problems has increased over time and it’s not clear why. If this new study may have a link to behavioral problems, then more research should be conducted while also avoiding sample bias.
Good job ladies.

ReplyDeleteI think that article is very interesting in the fact that phthalates increase the possibility of kids with behavioral problems. I believe that perhaps the tests that the mothers had to take where perhaps bias in the fact that only about 200 people got tested and that test may not prove anything towards the disorders that are created by these chemicals that are in our personal items. Also those personal utilities should have some type of labels or something that can show what these chemicals can do to us. I believe that if the products's companies know that those chemicals are bad and create those disorder, they should most definetely display that information. If it is proven that those chemicals create those disorders, then why doesn't the companies do something about it? The consumer should also be well aware of the products that they are buying and the effects that they can create. If a consumer read this article, they should be more aware of what they are buying and the chemicals that are found in their products.
Now speaking about behavioral problems, I believe that behavioral problems are not just caused by chemicals as such, but I believe that behavioral problems are caused by parents or guardians. Why? Well, I believe that if parents don't educate their children, their children simply won't be educated and disciplined. This then, creates the behavioral problems. I recall the article of "The Girl in the Window" and i recalled how nurture played a huge role in learning and language. I therefore belive that nurture, not only nature itself, creates some sort of way of causing behavioral problems in children.
I Cyndi Perera fully agree with both stephanie sanchez and veronica perez. These cosmetics and products need to keep beeing tested. We should be focusing on evaluating more experimental research to avoid all the bias results. Are they focusing only on pregnant women?....only on the fetus. how about if we ourselves are exposing our health to risks everyday by using those products.
ReplyDeleteMaybe phthalates doesnt only have risks for the childs development but, for the adults who are directly using the products.I think the united states should follow europes steps and band phthalates for the better of the people..as a precaution. If not then lets inform ourselves with the facts of what it can really do! we dont want pregnant women to be using those products without knowing it can affect the babys development and health!all there is left to say is that more research has to be done on that subject because its NOT a playing matter!
I do feel that steph , under me, had a good point. But as i read the article, though the study shows alot of evidenciary suuport that yes fragments and hair products and all of that that does contain phthalates that can causwe ADHD i do feel as the study needs alot further explanation and studies to actually be proven true. It could be that some of their subjects weren't good enough to actually be relaiable. More studies with children and parents should be conducted. This can actually lead to saying that its true that phthalates do cause ADHD or poorer scors in tests of attention, conduct and agression it could also be a study to a new door for how this can affect other factors or how behaviors actually develop. Again, nature vs. Nurture. I liked the way the article did mention though how in Europe phthalates can been banned and how in baby products they had been banned too. Gives alot more support to why phthalates arent good for the growth or mentality of babies/ kids. Over all i do think people should start being alot more careful to what products they purchase when pregnant, though this can or can not be the real facts of it all, it's best not to take the risk. Your baby's health should be the most important. As Steph said so herself, are kids are the future. We should hold a good future for our kids .

julio soto period#3 Phthalates can contribute to male reproductive problems. They can also cause adhd .while being used in many cosmetics it is debatable on whether after being used widely for fifty years the products are safer and whether or not they should be removed from cosmetics.
ReplyDeletewo wo wo before we jump to all this government regulation lets take a step back and read this article. first off, the article says that the problems with attention where diagnosed by low income mothers. Now im no rocket scientist (yet) but im pretty sure unless your a doctor or a psychologist with extensive background knowledge in psychological conditions, you can't be sure of what is normal or abnormal. secondly, the sample size is fairly small. they would need to broaden this study to include as many regions, races, and ecomomic backgrounds as possible. and suppose they redid the test where actual qualified professionals made the observations and the test subjects were broadened, and the results remained the same government regulation is not necessary. Instead offer taxbreaks to comsmetic companies who remove these chemicals from there products.
ReplyDeleteTo commence my statement, if there is a chance that the phthalates in those products are the cause of ADHD why are they even still out and about? They should at lest warn pregnant women about what it can do to their developing child. More research is needed but it is better to prevent than lament. I think that Europe has done the right thing! What kind of monsters leave such a product to affect unborn children, just to make money off of it?
ReplyDeleteThose product that contain phthalates should be banned until research can prove that either it is the phthalate or it just happens to be a coincident.

It seems to me that the companies are the ones responsible for this. They want to continue selling products but do not keep in mind that women, their target public, do get pregnant and still use those products during the pregnancy. The endocrine system, which regulates most of the hormones in the body, is very delicate and essential for living. A baby’s endocrine system is especially delicate because babies grow rapidly, physically and mentally. The endocrine system regulates their growth. With the intrusion on phthalates, children might not just get ADHD. I can imagine there are other effects of phthalates on children. If phthalates disrupt the function of thyroid hormones, which affect the development of the brain, children can be facing more serious problems than ADHD. The prenatal effects of phthalates will show in later life and can cause problems. The scientists developing these cosmetics and perfumes should be more aware of those sort of side effects and should start experimenting themselves. Companies should start printing warnings on their cosmetics and perfumes because the public deserves to know that information.

ReplyDeleteIt is rather interesting how knowing that phthalates can contribute to male reproductive problems and that they can cause adhd, yet nobody does anything about it? In my opinion, i agree with johandra because the companies are at fault here. Thats an example of why people say that money is everything. And yea they should atleast have a warning letting women know what it can do to their child. After reading this article it made me laugh and realize what type of world we live in. Now the next time i get called crazy or something ima use this article as an example of what crazy is. :)

ReplyDeleteIt's stated in the article that ADHD in children has increased over the years, and guess what has also increased over the years? Cosmetics, perfumes, shampoos, nail polishes, and all kinds of beauty supplies that are harmful to children in the womb. Also, if England banned phthalates from all their products why can't the rest of the world ban it too? Does money have anything to do with it? Maybe America and other countries are afraid that they'll loose profits if these chemicals are taken out of products that make the product better for the lady, but worse for the child inside of her. It's true that many chemicals can be the cause of diseases in humans, there's no better explanation, and inside the womb is the most delicate for development. What ever occurs inside the womb determines how the child is going to come out, and i think women shouldnt purchase any items with phthalates that could harm their babies, just like women shouldnt drink alcohol or dye their hairs when pregnant. If many have adjusted to these changes like not drinking when pregnant, then they can adapt to stay away from cosmetics that have that dangerous chemical in them.

ReplyDeleteI read the article & it's pretty interesting stuff. I don't agree with that sue-ing stuff, it's illogical due to the fact that the company's are just doing what helps them they don't always HAVE to think about you, thats selfish because they're already supplying you with the stuff & if its bad for you you should know it, DUH. I think that pregnant lady's should just be more careful with what they are using. & more than that why would people freak out about their kids being a little hyper? ALL kids are a little hyper in their own way. & when they reach school age these kids are gonna be with more kids that are hyper as well & if your kids not hyper by nature it's gonna be affected by all the other kid's hyper-ness & be hyper! It's madness! But yeah, thats gonna happen. Mother's shouldn't worry. There's no reason to stress what's most likely going to happen.

ReplyDeleteI think that the term ADHD is very overused. People are diagnosed with ADHD for anything these days and I think it has to do with the fact that there is a lot of business in therapy and pills that bring in money for the bigger companies that produce them but that we simply don't need.
It's not that people can't pay attention; it's that the material they are given does not interest them for one reason or another. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of kids with ADHD don't spend their lives not paying attention to anything in life and jumping around with hyperness.
As for the phthalates, I think that the experiments should be used as a foundation in order to make other experiments that show a larger variety of situations. I also think that they did not pass the law banning pthalates for toys only because they are dumb, but that there was most likely money being placed by the cosmetic companies under the table in order to ensure that their business doesn't suffer.
Wooh baby!!!!! This article is jumping into massive conclusions off of one simple test that they made. I completely agree with Gilbert. This test isn’t accurate or reliable!!!!!! Mothers are not capable of diagnosing a child with ADHD and that was the only source that was used to test these children. Aside from that, the test didn’t show a wide range of children, they were all 4 to 9 and all from the same place. This doesn’t allow an accurate conclusion to be made, since extraneous factors in the area could affect the children’s behavior. To me ADHD is not a disease it is something that is learned to do parental neglect and lack of attention. Everyone now a day is being diagnosed with ADHD and by the time they are in middle school, everyone has forgotten they have the silly “disease.” I’m not saying that the studies are wrong, don’t get me wrong, this may be a major breakthrough to stopping ADHD, but people must be complete sure and base their opinions on reliable results before coming to the conclusion of banding this chemical, or getting the government involved for the most part.

ReplyDeleteAs I read through this article, and skimmed through many of the comments I understood much more and had a stronger opinion. This article exceeds in things we have learned in your classroom. Such as experimental bias, those mothers (not a lot of mothers tested, about 200) tested for these children putting down their “wise and well-thought out opinions on the whole matter”. I understand what the facts lead up to, that children who had a huge amount of this chemical had ADHD. That could be pure coincidence understanding the lack of testers, and that the testers were in fact not the children thinking to have ADHD. This test I feel was not valid and lacked much reliability. I also would like to question what is bad with having this ADHD, these children aren’t really harmed in any matter, or harming any one. They seem to be doing fine in a society where most people are not well concentrated on anything of importance realizing that technology has really put a damper on what is important in life. This ADHD is a lack of the mental ability to focus; it’s not a case of something like retardation that needs careful watching and stimulus. They are in-grouping these children, not asking if they have anything else other than ADHD. They may just have a different mindset, an emotional or creative intellect. If these chemicals are doing bad things there is nothing more to do other than companies stop putting these chemicals in the products, or people stop buying the products selflessly. Another point could be convergent thinking; researchers are probably just look at this matter toward one way or solution. If they really want to discover the problem they should think of more ideas, more options why children have this not really a problem. This is my opinion, and I have included how the article has related to what we have learned.
After reading this article, discovered that phthalates can block male hormones and feminize boys or contribute to male reproductive problems. Not only that, but they state that children exposed in the womb to this chemical can develop ADHD! Sure, we banned phthalates in children’s vinyl toys and other products. But what about the shampoos and lotions!? Women in particular are the ones that use this the most. Someone has to do something now to prevent this from increasing. Although i do agree that not enough research has been done and the sample size tested was too small, i still believe we shouldn't just discard it altogether. We need to do further research & see what's really going on.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion this article is not the most statistically rigorous or scientifically pure, but it is not meaningless and should not be dismissed. It is common sense to know that phthalates are dangerous to the normal functions of human, so we should minimize our exposure to all those chemicals, especially pregnant women because without any doubts it will affect their babies.

It's incredible, beyond belief, that companies seriosuly aren't putting these warnings up on labels. We have warnings almost everywhere! And yet when it comes to our health, even a defenseless baby's health, the busniess' profit is still more important. When a company or industry is wealthy like i suppose the hair, nails, etc inc. is then it's almost impossible to shut it down. There should be more test and trials done that furthur prove ADHD is being cuased by phthalates, the sooner the better. Two-hundred mothers doesn't sound very unbiased or scientifically accurate. Another thing to keep in mind, motherhood is a responsiblity from the moment the little plus sign fades onto the pregnancy stick. Like lizzy mentioned, the same way there are perquisites against alchol and specific nutrients... chemicals that are absorbed into our body shouldn't be applied on in the first place. My mother went through her entire pregnancy with gray roots coming out and not one drop of nail polish, even at her baby shower. There comes a time when the U.S has to swallow their pride and just accept that if it's being done in Europe then it's becuase something harmful is going on. No child ever wants to have any disease, especially one that makes u swallow an army of pills daily. It affects children's learning abilities and conduct grades at school. I should know, my close friend goes through it everyday, and it's something he souldn't have to go through becuase of the cosmetic's companies ambition, mother's lack of knowledge, and scientific commuities slow researching skills.

The only problem with the study is that these children werent observed by doctors or diagnosed by them as having behaviors found in children with ADHD.It was all the mother's testimonials which really hurts the credability of the study itself. If they were to get doctors to study the children and diagnose them with these behaviors then there would be some need to regulate the use of phthalates in cosmetics to avoid damaging the children. The study just has to made more credible and relpicated several times. yii btw Mrs. Borges im actually doing stuff :o intensity, sorry

It's sad how some women would sometimes risk the health of their unborn baby for beauty...
However, the statistics could be biased, as researchers EXPECT a relation between amount of phthalates and a child's mental status. Similar to the full moon and patients theory.

Just like the media to make such a big deal out of a measley sample of less than 200 kids :/
Simple solution to this..we just BAN this!(If Europe can do this so can WE!)
...but since we are in an economic crisis, people will go out of their way to get the money they want! They don't care if they bring harm to people, they don't WANT to put warnings up so they can scare away customers, all they want is $$$!!!
Alternate solution: we all just stop having so much sex. "More babies, more problems" ;)
Whoa. Whoa. WHOA! How can something like this not be put out to the media, or like be shown in the news, I think if it wasn't for this class i would have never found out about this. A chemical exposure that might cause ADHD? Why don't companies put on their labels, warning signs about this. I don't know about you but I've never seen a shampoo bottle talk warn me about phthalates. ADHD is a serious disease and can really make a child's life as well as the parent's life more difficult. The funny part of this is that the US of A knows that in Europe these phthalates are banned from cosmetics, and what do we do? We do absolutely nothing about it, I mean if this country finds it wrong shouldn't we do the ethical thing and just put at least warning signs on these products. Besides i think that more research should go into this, because like i said this is something serious that needs to be dealt with very seriously. And instead of testing the mothers of the children they should also test the children as well, and try to broaden the experiment with not just low income families but middle and upper classes. Something should be done about this and should be done very quickly, before this gets way worse.

ReplyDeleteI'm not really sure what side to be one because for one, it seems like the people who studied this don't have enough evidence or support to say that phthalates are the cause for kids having ADHD. Agreeing with Ali, they only studied a small group of kids, from the same place, ethnic group, and economic status, how can you get a clear result like that? But on the other hand, I do understand that it is a danger for pregnant woman to keep using phthalates because is can be harmful, but then again, they should be aware of all the ingredients in the materials they're using especially if they're pregnant. If they know for example, that they shouldn't drink, then they should also know that phthalates or any other chemical can be harmful for their babies development. Also, Johana made a good point when stating that ADHD isn't a disease, it something you learn as a result from neglect and lack of attention.
Paul Avarez p.6
ReplyDeleteWalking down the street now a days and seeing a girl without any cosmetics, perfumes, nail polish is almost unheard of. Women from what i know care a lot about how they look and what people think about them. So even with the release of this article women won't stop using cosmetics.
Now with the problem with ADHD. I agree with almost everyone that has posted in saying that the term ADHD is way OVERUSED! Everyone is accused of having it these days. Do I think the phthalates in cosmetics is what caused children to get ADHD? NO! The mind of a child can be easy manipulated when its young. I believe if you raise it to be a person on task, then he will grow up to do so. ANd if you raise him by spoiling them and buying them videos games and such who says THATS not the reason for the children supposely having ADHD.
Also, the sueing is just ridiculous because the companies selling the cosmetics need to make money to stay in bussiness, and its the buyers responsibility to know the side effects. Companies are not required to put a warning label for a problem the product might have due to one biased test and a few doctors opinions.
All in all, i dont believe this article should be thrown out because perhaps maybe it is later proven true, but right now i wouldnt worry to much about it. Just remember to raise your child to be a successful person, not just another clown.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to agree with edward. All these companies want is money. THey make all these commericials with this soothing theme and make these products sound great. But many people dont really pay attention to what is in these products and what it might do. And nethier does the producer.
I really think that if you cared about your customers and wanted to make money you would avoid harmful substances and anything that shouldnt be flowing through our veins. We slowly kill and ruin ourselves for pleasures and luxuries. It's sad really how some can only see the puppet and not hte puppetmaster in these types of things. Example, fast food restaurants, they do similar advertising and make it all sound good (puppet) but the corporet pigs sit in the back while we ruin ourselves and make their piggy banks fatter.

ReplyDeleteMy opinion on this is that the test shouldn't have been done that way. I think that scientists should have actually evaluated the children and see how they behave. The mothers could also have chosen any answer just to chose something, since it was multiple choice. I agree with Engel from the article that this experiment should be replicated. Besides, if they are going to ask questions to the mothers, why chose mostly low income mothers who don't waste money buying products. Next time chose rich moms that use tons of cosmetics. So Im not worried that much about phthalates.
All pregnant women want a healthy child. So, if they care so much about the infant, why put them at risk of a learning disorder to look pretty? If women were careful of the cosmetics they used theyd have the chance of a much healthier child with no type of learning disability. Morever, helping the childs entire life socially so that they wont grow up off track with its peers.

As i read this article, i started to think that out of only one experiment done, they were blaming the phthalates for causing ADHD. In my opinion, i dont think that these products are causing the ADHD in kids. Like Paul said, If you raise your kid well and on task he or she will grow up with no physical or mental problems but if you spoil them and you dont introduce the right elements a kid needs to grow up with a healthy mind, this will mostly likely affect them and possibly develope ADHD in the future. I think that the experiment needs to be done again but this time with a greater range of kids and better classified scientists that will keep the amount of variables to a minimum.

In my opinion now in days everyone seems to have ADHD, just cause a child can not stay still does not mean that they automatically have the condition. Some children just have short attention spans. It all comes down to wheather what they are learning or hearing intrest them, its more of a selective hearing issue. As far as the studies i belive that they should not be so broad, they should be broken down into diffrent qualifications, such as gender, race, ethic background, or women with medical histories. More studies should be preformed on these women.

ReplyDeleteI believe that such use of chemical is wrong, especially since most of the women like beautifying themselves. Most of the beauty items such as make-up and nail polish has phthalates. Women like smelling and looking good and there's a big chance that most of them don't know the effects of the chemical or even know it's in their everyday-use products. ADHD can be a serious case to a child's learning environment. Normally, a kid concentrates and ends up not getting everything the teacher said, so imagine having a sickness that distracts the child. It would take him/her longer to learn than the rest of the kids since it's harder to concentrate, putting him behind.
And stephanie, your question "what has the world come to?", i'll answer it for you. Companies are heartless and don't think about the effects on people. Why do you think companies can sell drugs knowing it can kill people? All these companies care about is getting their pay checks on fridays to live their happy lives. They don't really care if as time goes by the percentage of children being born with ADHD increases.

ReplyDeleteThis article was very interesting. First of all why haven’t the companies done something about this, it can’t keep going is going to affect the future generation. The article states that ADHD in children has increased over the past years, maybe the chemical in all these products specially the phthalates have something to do with the behavioral problems but the experiment is bias not many mothers and children where tested, this is very limited. They should run further test and many more trials and with more people to prove ADHD is cause by phthalates. And all this is the companies fault for not putting the labels and warning us about all those chemicals that are bad for us. Why do they do this? Probably is just because for the money, because that is all they cared about.
In my opinion, having an experiment with 188 children from ages 4 to 9 was a waste of time since they did not used any doctors or other clinicians to evaluate the child in the experiment. The findings were based on the Mother's evaluation. Nowadays, parents want their child to be categorized as 'intelligent' or 'gifted' but why are we so quick to instantly categorize our children with ADHD just because the mother used cosmetics and fragrances that cause the child to become ADHD. This would lead to the Mother's realizing that they have unintentionally put their child at risk because they put on that perfume that they've always have been wearing, how would you like to know that YOU caused your child’s disorder. How would you be able to live with yourself watching your child grow and stay in the special Ed. Classes and not being aware of the outside world? No parent should have to ever endure the lifetime pain of having the knowledge that they have caused their child’s disease. The psychological trauma of being aware of the fact that a mother caused her child to be ADHD, This would lead to the mother not wanting to have anything to deal with their child because they think that they’re going to further hurt their child. This will cause the child to have psychological problems because of the fact that he will never have his/her mother’s affection just like Danielle in the news article. Hence, doctors shouldn’t conclude that a women’s cosmetics and certain fragrances cause a child to have ADHD, there should professionally evaluate the child.

okay, so the fact that Europe decided to ban phthalates from all their products should have set off a red flag to the rest of the world advising to ban this chemical completely. It's true that it's the mothers responsibility to take care of the baby in her womb and protect it from harmful chemicals but what if the mother had no clue about the effects of phthalates?
ReplyDeleteAlso, the fact that companies want to do whatever to sell their product does not give them the right to put whichever chemicals into their products.
Some things I do disagree with is the way the experiment was performed. The children were from ages just 4-9 and the mothers came front the same area. The experiment should be have included mothers from different locations and it should have had a wider range of ages. The experiment should definitely be redone to confirm that phthalates is the cause of why more and more kids are being born with ADHD.

After reading this article, my opinion is that conducting an experiment on only 200 women doesnt make the experiment, in my eyes valid. Companies are more worried with making money than the health of the people using their products. The companies should place labels on all possible dangers and precautions needed to be taken. If the cosmetics and purfumes may cause pregnent women ADHD to them and their children. I believe that a way to stop this sort of things from happening is by making a law that will force companies to put labels on all their products that may cause a danger to humans. Or a even simpler way is ban the product and the problem will be easily solved!

ReplyDeleteI would like to agree with pretty much everyone. I mean the reason why the companies do this is for them to benefit themselves and gain money. Because if they really did care, they wouldn’t of still of put the products on sale, when they know that there are harming it for not only us but for the future generations to come. In the passage it says that percentage of kids diagnosed with behavioral problems has been increasing over time. Now my question is why is there not a stop. Why cant they find a cure of it.
Behavioral not only takes a role on certain chemical products but what the parents also put in in there kids life. I do actually agree with sarai , about this topic.
It was a shocker to me because I just couldn’t believe that they don’t put certain products they use on there labels. Like now that as to do with morals and principals. If you really cared about your consumers and you really wanted them to buy from you again, you wouldn’t do that.
To conclude, this article should be taken in consideration and everyone that is purchasing anything within that should really analyze because we have to let others know of what’s really going on.
seriously? -_- what the heck the test was soooo not reliable... There just wasnt enough kids participating in this "study" if you can even call it that. So not only were the mothers, most of which were form the same are, the ones answering the questions but the kids were not actually observed by doctors or psychologist!!!! Seriously no offense to mothers im sure they "know their kids" but they are just not qualified to dianose their kids with an attention problem.
ReplyDeletenow that thats out of the way, it does seem possible that these chemicals found in shampoo and all that stuff could affect a childs behavior in the future, but before anyone jumps to comclusions a professional should test the actal child. Also the levels of the chemicals being used by the preggos has to be taken into account, for exaple they should make a suggestion of how much is too much

I complete and truley believe what chris is saying, how could these test possible be reliable, the childern were not even looked at by doctors or psychologist how could a mother who proabaly has no PHD tell their child has a problem area. I believe they do this for money, i mena they could put lables and "say" other shampoos and proucts do harm but why id it still on the market? Also they didnt even do a long study it was for what about 200 moms what about the other Billion!!!!

I do agree with the fact that these chemicals found in most cosmetic products may affect a child in the future but i dont see the accuracy in the research which is supposed to prove that this information is really true. Their are so many exposures in the real world, in my opinion, far more dangerous than daily consumer products. So many things can go wrong during a pregnancy that it is hard to put a finger on the actual origin of the problem. I believe that this is a possible consideration towards why the numbers of children with learning disabilities in this day and age are increasing but it isnt something that should be taken all that seriously such as sueing these companies. As said before by other students, if this does become a big problem and a more acurate scientific study that gears towards this all being true, it would have to be up to the customer to inform themeselves upon these risks. Sure companies have to put in their part but customers have to be aware of this as well. In addition to all of this, no doctors or psychologists were used during testing where only the mothers were asked about their childrens behavior. I think that a first time mother or even an experienced one handling a toddler would say that they are hyper active and unnatentive because that is their nature. Even when they are being entertained, they are more likely to be jumpy and not paying attention because of the foods they eat as well (a variable that should have been considered). A kid jacked up on sugary snacks is sure to have an "ADHD" problem. There are so many other things to consider and the experiment should have been more detailed.

I don't find it surprising at all that these companies are keeping this vital information from their target audience: women. They don't realize that women, even while pregnant, will still continue to use their products as long as it poses no potential threat to them(that they're aware of). The companies just want to continue making their money and as long as they don't have to advertise the potential threats of their product, they won't.
On another note, I agree with Christian. This "study" doesn't really qualify as a study because it wasn't done by professionals who know what signs to look for. Some of the actions shown by the child could have been cause from a number of other reasons prior to the incident.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article I couldnt help but question if the chemicals in these products are, in deed, the true cause of ADHD in children. It just seems a tad far fethced theat these reaserchers would assume that its these specific products such as shampoo, nail polish, and lotions, which are causing ADHD in children. I believe that it has more to do on the upbringing of the child and other external factors which obviously were not taken into consideration in this research.
Now a days children spent a great deal of their time playing video games, or watching tv, not with their parents. Parents are busy as well, and it makes thier data of their child unreliable. This research could have been better performed. For example, doctors could have diagnosed the children with ADHD instead of a survey, which many times parents dont even take seriously.
I also believe that its the responsibility of parents to know whats inside the products they use on a daily basis. As responsible parents that they claim to be, they should inform themselves on the chemicals that are used in things that they are exposing their children to.
